A man is facing court after a woman was allegedly punched in the face in Wellington at the weekend.

The woman, who didn't want to be named, told Newshub she was walking down Ghuznee St about 1pm on Saturday when the incident took place.

"I was on my way home from dropping some clothes at a friend's house after work at about 1pm. I was walking down Ghuznee St with my headphones on and saw the man walking on my side of the road staring at me and saying something," she said.

"I didn't sense any danger, especially since he looked old enough to be around my dad's age, so I took my headphone off one ear to ask if he had said something and that's when he came up to me and punched me in the face."

Another woman saw the assault and snapped a photo of the alleged offender. That photo was shared on social media to warn others.

Thankfully, the woman punched wasn't badly hurt.

"It wasn't a super strong punch and I didn't have any bad injuries, just a very red cheek for a little while," she said.

The woman decided to file a report with police after talking with her mum about what happened.

"She said it would be good for them to just be aware in case he did something to another girl, which is why I ended up doing it."

The woman said she was embarrassed following the incident and didn't want it to go public, but after the alleged offender's photo was shared online there was an outpouring of concern.

"I saw a lot of comments worried about it and wanted to let people know that authorities were aware and helping out, also because the girl who helped was really kind and I did want to thank her," she said.

"I'm doing okay now, I'm a bit more careful walking around in public but have just stayed wary when walking around."

Police told Newshub they received a report of an assault on Ghuznee St, Te Aro, on Saturday around 2pm.

A 53-year-old man appeared in Wellington District Court on Thursday.

He was remanded on bail to reappear at the Wellington District Court on June 21.
