New Zealand weather: Heavy rain and severe gales to lash large swathe of country

Central and southern New Zealand are in store for rough weather, with forecasters warning of heavy rain and severe gales.

MetService has issued a number of weather watches and warnings.

An orange strong wind warning is in force for the Canterbury High Country until 5pm on Saturday.  

Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures, MetService warned. "Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles."

A heavy rain watch is in place for ranges of the Westland District until 4pm on Saturday.

MetService said the area is expected to have a period of heavy rain and accumulations may approach warning criteria. Thunderstorms are also possible in the south during the morning.

A strong wind watch is in place for many other parts of the country.

Hawke's Bay from about Napier southwards

Period: 9hrs from 7pm Sat, 1 Jun - 4am Sun, 2 Jun

Forecast: Westerly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.

Tararua District

Period: 18hrs from 9am Sat, 1 Jun - 3am Sun, 2 Jun

Forecast: West to northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.

Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa

Period: 16hrs from 9am Sat, 1 Jun - 1am Sun, 2 Jun

Forecast: Northwesterly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places. Winds are expected to ease for Marlborough during the evening.

Inland Canterbury Plains

Period: 8hrs from 9am - 5pm Sat, 1 Jun

Forecast: Northwesterly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places. Winds expected to ease from the south from late afternoon.

Queenstown Lakes District and Central Otago

Period: 5hrs from 9am - 2pm Sat, 1 Jun

Forecast: Northwesterly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.

Stewart Island and coastal parts of mainland Southland, Clutha and Dunedin

Period: 9hrs from 9am - 6pm Sat, 1 Jun

Forecast: West to southwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.

The central and northern North Island are expected to have mostly fine weather on Saturday.
