An alleged offender has been shot by police after they drove at officers attempting to execute a search warrant in Āwhitu.
Counties Manukau District Commander Shanan Gray said a number of specialist officers, including the Armed Offenders Squad, arrived at the Āwhitu Central Road property shortly after 7am, to execute a search warrant in relation to firearms offences.
In a statement, Cmdr Gray said on arrival, a man inside a car attempted to drive into police officers.
"One Police officer was struck by the vehicle and a second was required to dive out of the way of an ongoing vehicle."
An armed officer then shot the offender in the vehicle.
First aid was immediately provided to the man, before he was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition.
Three other people were located within the property and detained in relation to the search warrant, however, a fifth man fled into nearby bush.
A Newshub camera operator at the scene could hear police calling on the man to give himself up, shortly after 9am.
"There is armed police all around the bush, and we have a dog unit tracking you," the police officer can be heard saying over a loudhailer.
"We need you to come up to the road and give yourself up".
The man remains at large, with police saying they don't believe he poses a threat to the wider public.
Dozens of armed officers are gathered on Āwhitu Central Road.
While the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was sent to the scene, Hato Hone St John confirmed the patient was transported to hospital by ambulance.
Cmdr Gray confirmed a number of investigations are now underway.
This includes a critical incident investigation and a policy, practice and procedure investigation.
"As standard procedure, the Independent Police Conduct Authority has also been notified, along with WorkSafe."
