Popular Auckland street figure Ian Morgan, known as One Dread, has died.

An obituary notice published in the NZ Herald on Friday confirmed Morgan's death, saying he was 69.

"The family thanks the staff at Auckland Hospital for their care and the people who showed him kindness over may years, R.I.P. Ian."

Many people across Auckland have taken to community Facebook groups in the wake of news of One Dread's death.

"Will miss our letterbox chats when he's headed home with his hot chips. Thought I'd missed him this week but sadly not," one user wrote.

He was a feature of inner Auckland for many years, with some posters saying they remembered seeing him in the 80s and 90s.

Others spoke about seeing him around Karangahape Road in the early 2000s.

"An icon of K Road growing up, bet he's seen some things over the years."

"Holy smoke, he is an eternal legend. I thought he was gone ages ago, then randomly saw him a month ago... what interesting stories he could've shared."

No details have been shared about his funeral service.
