Police have removed cordons around The Zone shopping centre in Auckland's Pukekohe after an "unidentified item" was found there on Sunday morning.

Earlier, a number of officers swarmed the carpark on Manukau Rd and the public was told to stay away.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team assessed the item and found it "does not present a wider risk to the public," a police spokesperson said.

"Police would like to thank the public and those working at the premises for complying with Police requests while we responded to the matter."
