RNZ app malfunctions sending mass alerts of old stories

Radio New Zealand has been alerting dozens of old notifications about old stories.

The state broadcaster's app appears to be malfunctioning on Friday, sending notifications linking to old stories on its website. The notifications include Prince Philip's death, the Christchurch mosque attacks, All Black Sir Brian Lochore's death, James Shaw being assaulted and UK MPs voting on Brexit.

An RNZ spokesperson said the notifications have stopped.

"We are aware that our RNZ app push notification system inadvertently sent out a series of previous news notifications this morning. This appears to be the result of a fix to another fault identified and resolved this morning," the spokesperson said.

"We apologise for this issue."

The notifications were sent out just before midday.

People have gone straight to social media to poke fun at the glitch.

"Thoughts and prayers to the RNZ digital team but I’m personally enjoying the walk down memory lane," one person posted.

"Huge day for news at RNZ," another said.

"Hey, @rnz_news you ok, hon?" a third said.
