Traffic queues have been building in north Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland after motorway mayhem on Tuesday evening.
Police say they've arrested one man after a "protracted" pursuit, in which he collided with three police vehicles as police signalled him to pull over.
The man is accused of fleeing from police shortly before 5pm on State Highway 1, Northern Motorway.
"Police had concerns for the wellbeing of the driver and maintained observations of the vehicle, eventually spiking the tyres and bringing it to a stop on the Northern Motorway near Ōteha Valley on/off ramps," police said in a statement.
"Three Police vehicles were damaged after the fleeing driver collided with them in the process of being brought to a stop."
Nobody was injured, the spokesperson added, but charges are being considered.
"Delays are still being experienced on the roading network but are expected to clear soon," the police spokesperson said.
NZ Transport Agency/Waka Kotahi said all southbound lanes have reopened, in an update at 7:30pm.
"Expect residual delays in the area as congestion eases," it said in a post on X.
The left southbound lane had earlier been blocked to allow for vehicle recovery.
