Kiwis might need to prepare their wet weather gear with heavy rain expected to pour on parts of New Zealand this weekend.

MetService said rain was expected for many regions from Sunday, particularly in the north and the west.

"There is moderate confidence rainfall amounts will reach warning criteria about Westland, and low confidence for the Grey and Buller districts, Nelson/Tasman," the forecaster said. "In addition, there is moderate confidence northerly winds will rise to severe gale in exposed parts of Wellington, and low confidence for Taranaki, Marlborough and the Canterbury High Country."

But that likely won't be all the wild weather has to offer, with another front expected to move across New Zealand on Monday morning.

MetService's severe weather forecast confirms the chances of heavy rain in Westland on Monday are moderate. There's also a low confidence of downpours in Grey/Buller, Nelson/Tasman, northern Marlborough, north Taranaki and parts of Bay of Plenty on Monday.

"Overnight [Sunday] and into Monday next week that front crosses NZ with windy westerlies turning cooler southerly in the deep south later," WeatherWatch said.
