Parts of Auckland and the Coromandel would've been waking up still in the dark on Monday morning with widespread power outages across parts of the North Island.

Vector's online outage map showed areas in Auckland's north, south, and northwest experiencing unplanned power cuts, but restoration work is underway.

"A few showers, possibly heavy and thundery, clearing late morning with fine breaks increasing. Showers returning for Great Barrier Island this evening. Northerlies, turning westerly late morning and dying out this afternoon," the weather agency predicts.
