Gulf Harbour body in bags: Man and woman arrested

A man and woman have been arrested in relation to the case of a woman's body that was found in the water in Gulf Harbour, north Auckland, earlier this year.

A recreational fisherman discovered the pyjama-clad body, which was in multiple plastic bags, while out fishing in March.

The arrests were first publicised on Monday but police were forced to seek a court order retracting publication of the details following what they said was an internal "miscommunication".

Acting Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said the Operation Parade team arrested the two people, both aged 36, after they attempted to leave the country late on Sunday evening.

They appeared in the North Shore District Court on Monday charged with interfering with human remains.

Harrison said police are working with Immigration NZ on the investigation.

They also executed a search warrant at a residential address in Ōrewa on Monday in relation to the case.

"Police are speaking to a number of people at the address as part of our enquiries."

The dead woman has still not been identified. In March police said she was believed to be of Asian descent, possibly Chinese, and small in stature - around 160cm tall.

She was wearing distinctive pyjamas from a clothing brand sold in China, but not in New Zealand.
