A man has been arrested after an "incredibly dangerous" drive across the Kāpiti-Mana region on Tuesday afternoon
The man, who was wanted by Police, was spotted in Waitangirua.
Police say after he was asked to stop he fled, starting a chase to Paekākāriki and then back to Waitangirua covering almost 100km.
Police followed the driver to State Highway 59 near Paremata where they abandoned the pursuit "due to the vehicle travelling dangerously on the wrong side of the road," area commander Inspector Renee Perkins said in a statement.
The vehicle continued to drive north toward Paekākāriki where police set out road spikes.
"The male then drove towards Kāpiti where he took a car from a member of the public and drove south on Transmission Gully," Insp Perkins said.
The armed offenders squad was called for assistance, and followed the vehicle as it drove south on Transmission Gully.
Ignoring signals to stop the man exited the motorway at Waitangirua. Shortly after police successfully brought the man to a stop on Champion Street, Porirua. The man was arrested without further danger to the public.
"I want to acknowledge the work of Police staff in this incredibly dangerous, fast-moving situation," Insp Perkins said.
"Those involved were able to make critical decisions to ensure the safety of everybody involved."
