Northland police have opened an investigation into a child's death in Kaikohe in 2015.
The 4-year-old child, Alestra Kepa-Hati, died in October 2015.
Alestra Kepa-Hati was living with caregivers in rural Kaikohe at the time of her death.
"As part of this investigation we are looking into the circumstances of her death, which at this stage is being treated as unexplained," said Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Fouhy, the Far North Investigations Manager.
"Police, including the CIB, are making further enquiries into this matter, and are gathering information about the circumstances leading up to Alestra's death," he said.
"The death of a child is a tragic and distressing incident for all involved and Police are working to understand exactly what has happened."
Police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
