Mikkelson has been an integral part of the NZ men's sevens programme for more than a decade and will be key to their chances of medalling at Tokyo.
He debuted for the All Blacks Sevens in 2008 and has now played more tournaments (91) than any other NZ player before him, surpassing the previous record held by former captain DJ Forbes.
Mikkelson has been part of Commonwealth Games gold-medal teams at Delhi 2010 and Gold Coast 2018, and helped them to World Cup victories in 2013 and 2018.
On the IRB World Sevens circuit, he has scored more than 200 tries and sits third all-time.
Mikkelson has also represented Waikato in the National Provincial Championship and Chiefs in Super Rugby.
