Lisa Carrington, Alicia Hoskin, Caitlin Regal, Teneale Hatton finished fourth, behind winners Hungary, silver medallists Belarus and third-placed Poland.
The Kiwi crew made a blazing start and, but had faded to third spot after 250 metres, and the fast-finishing Poles ran down New Zealand in the final 100m to claim bronze by seven-tenths of a second.
