The streets of Papakura are criss-crossed by a series of alleyways.
These allow those on foot and bike to traverse the large suburban blocks, and give access to pathways not accessible by car.
The intruder who stabbed Arthur Easton in his home on Grove Road escaped the house by the back door. He went through a hole in the Easton's hedge, and ran down the alleyway that connected Grove Road with Alma Crescent.
From there, he was tracked by police sniffer dogs running down Alma Crescent - and there the trail was lost.
But a crucial witness in the case - who we have referred to as Witness A - saw a person running that night.
In the minutes after Arthur Easton was murdered, that person was seen running down Shirley Avenue, across Clevedon Road, and into the alleyway that connected Clevedon Road with Edmund Hillary Avenue.
