Labour veteran Annette King has insisted she will step down from the deputy leader job if that's what the caucus wants.

The latest 3 News/Reid Research poll has Jacinda Ardern as the favourite for the role.

National MP Judith Collins was full of praise for Ms King on the Paul Henry programme this morning, calling her a "superb deputy leader".

"We would like her to be changed because she is too good," she says.

Ms King wouldn't be drawn on whether she wants to hold onto the job.

"I would like to do the job if they want me – that's the important thing, not what I want."

Ms King says she won't be wrestling Ms Ardern for the role, because she's a great admirer of her.
