Paying an excessive fine for being clamped could become a thing of the past, with the Government exploring ways to reduce fines or get rid the method altogether.
Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi says he's hearing "horror stories" of people paying "$600, $700 before [they] can get their cars back".
"That's the kind of horror story that we don't want to be seeing."
Mr Faafoi says there are a number of other options being explored.
"Whether it be a fine, getting that fine to an acceptable level because you do have to balance out the frustration of having that amount of money they're being asked to pull out when they do get clamped.
Editor of the car news website Dog and Lemon Guide Clive Matthew-Wilson says currently motorists are being ripped off by "an industry run by cowboys and crooks".
"What they need is much much more regulation."
However, Mr Faafoi says any changes could be months away. Final recommendations will be made later this year.
