Peters was taking a week off Parliament as he recovers from surgery for an old rugby injury, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Monday.
"Paula Bennett sent me flowers in hospital," the Deputy Prime Minister tweeted Thursday. "Seriously bad taste. Also, they looked like she just picked them from a local park! Gave them away to an elderly patient. Not knowing their origin, she really appreciated them."
Ardern said Peters was "having a small surgical procedure to address an old leg issue and has been advised post-procedure to have some days avoiding travel and not bearing weight."
Peters is a former representative of the New Zealand Māori rugby team and captain of the Auckland Māori Rugby team.
Paula Bennett has been approached for comment.
