New Zealand will be renamed Aotearoa if the Māori Party is elected, Waiariki candidate Rawiri Waititi says.
Waititi said on Monday the party would also replace all European cities, towns, and places with their original Māori names by 2026.
"It's a bold move towards making Te Reo Māori a language for all of Aotearoa," Waititi said in a statement. "It elevates Te Reo Māori to its rightful place, in a system that has long undervalued its significance."
Jacinda Ardern said it's not something her Labour Party has explored.
National leader Judith Collins also said it wouldn't happen "when I'm Prime Minister".
