Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson has thrown her weight behind Greta Thunberg instead of Jacinda Ardern as the winner of the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.
Bookies have Prime Minister Ardern ranked in the top 3 for the Nobel Peace Prize along with climate activist Thunberg and the World Health Organization (WHO).
But despite being in a coalition agreement with the Labour leader, Davidson endorsed Thunberg when she was asked to choose between the pair on Friday.
"Oh look, young people, rising up around the world for climate, who wouldn't love Greta?" Davidson told The Project.
There are speculations the prestigious prize will be awarded to Ardern for her empathetic response to the Christchurch terror attacks in 2019 as well as her swift action towards combatting COVID-19 in New Zealand.
But Thunberg is top of the charts amongst bookmakers for her climate change activism and leadership towards the global movement against climate change.
The recipient of the award will receive a specially-designed diploma, a gold medal and a cash prize of 100 million Swedish kronor (NZ$1.71 million).
Other top contenders for the prize include:
- US President Donald Trump
- Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny
- the Black Lives Matter movement
- British filmmaker David Attenborough
- the Committee to Protect Journalists
- Climate activist Greta Thunberg
- the World Health Organization (WHO).
The winner will be announced after 10 pm on Friday.
