Former Labour Party leader David Shearer has been approached to consider a bid for Auckland Mayoralty.
The NZ Herald reports some Labour MPs have approached Shearer about running for Mayor, should incumbent Phil Goff's bid fail.
Goff, also a former Labour leader, is tipped to be the Ambassador to Washington after his Mayoral term ends as the Government attempts to boost its trade relationship under US President Joe Biden.
Shearer confirmed to the Herald a Mayoral bid had been mentioned to him by Labour MPs but said he had not had time to consider it.
Goff has been the Mayor of Auckland since 2016 and was reelected in the most recent 2019 local government election by a landslide against John Tamihere.
He said at the time his priorities were infrastructure, climate change and the review of council-controlled organisations.
