Simon Bridges' injured son now recovering at home, behaving like 'a very old man'

Simon Bridges' son, badly injured in a playground accident at school, is now recovering at home.

Seven-year-old Harry was rushed to Starship Hospital on December 2, suffering a torn liver and internal bleeding after an accident on a swing. As a result, Bridges missed that day's announcement he'd become the National Party's new finance spokesperson.

A few days later Harry was well enough to be cracking jokes, and speaking to The AM Show on Friday, Bridges said Harry is now doing "great".

"He's here at home. I just want to be hugely thankful to you and others who have sent well-wishes, Starship Hospital."

Santa's elves will have a bit of extra work to do, with Harry's original Christmas gift no longer doable.

"He's got to act a bit like not a seven-year-old but a very old man for a few weeks just to recover, so he's not going to get the trampoline he was promised for Christmas," said Bridges.

"Other than that he's going really well, and we're just very grateful to everyone for where we're at right now."

Bridges has three children with wife Natalie - Harry, Jemima and Emlyn.
