Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern due to hold unscheduled press conference

Newshub understands the Prime Minister is due to hold an unscheduled press conference.

Jacinda Ardern and Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield will hold an urgent stand up at 11am.

It comes after several border-related Omicron cases in the past days including an airline, airport and MIQ worker.

This week Ardern said if Omicron moves beyond the border the whole country would move to red within 24-48 hours.

"It is important to remember that red does not mean lockdowns or regional boundaries, and businesses remain open," she said earlier in the week.

"What it does mean is immediately increasing our use of masks, changing the way we interact in hospitality and reducing gathering sizes in order to slow Omicron down."

Ardern said planning was "well advanced" for an Omicron outbreak, with new case management, close contact definition and testing rules fit for purpose for Omicron being finalised, as well as plans to support the business continuity.

On Saturday the Ministry of Health confirmed an Auckland Airport worker who tested positive for COVID-19 has the Omicron variant.

The 11am press conference will be livestreamed on Three and newshub.co.nz
