The latest Newshub-Reid Research poll shows a slim majority of Kiwis think Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern should run again in 2023.
The latest poll results will be gutting for the Prime Minister. Just as she's opening the country back up - what's supposed to be her celebration of getting back to normal - the COVID-19 shine has worn off.
Now, people suffering from the cost of living are punishing her. Labour's vote has plummeted 6.1 points, down to 38.2 percent - its first tumble into the 30s since Ardern became Prime Minister in 2017.
National has shot past Labour, cracking the 40 percent mark. It's now at 40.5 percent, up a whopping 9.2 points, reaching close to its pre-pandemic heights.
Voters are willing to give Ardern one more shot, though it's dicey.
The latest Newshub-Reid Research poll asked: Do you think Jacinda Ardern should stand for a third term as Prime Minister at next year's election.
By the slimmest of slim majorities, the country said yes, with 50.2 percent supporting her to give it another crack, compared to 41.1 percent who said no.
There is a very good opportunity for the Government to turn things around this month with the Budget being unveiled on May 19.
With 16 sleeps to go until Budget Day, the Government really needs to pull a rabbit out of a hat to bring voters back on side.
The Newshub-Reid Research poll was conducted between 18 April – 27 April 2022 with a margin of error of 3.1 percent.
