New Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell is facing calls to resign following revelations he was involved in a group attack on a younger student at Kings College more than 20 years ago.
The National Party MP only apologised to the victim last year, prompting questions about whether it was politically motivated.
A petition is now calling for Uffindell's immediate resignation.
"It doesn't matter if it's 22 years ago or two years ago," the petition said. "Should a man who has done this be representing people in Parliament? We say no!"
But the calls for Uffindell's resignation have also been met with a counter-petition saying he shouldn't have to quit.
"I don't believe someone should be forced out of their job for the actions they committed as a juvenile and were subsequently punished for and as such I hope you'll join me by signing this petition to show that New Zealanders do in fact believe people can learn their past misdeeds and do good for their community and nation," the second petition said.
