Auckland mayor Phil Goff revealed his advice to his younger self as he parts from a long-standing career in politics.
Earlier this year, Goff announced his retirement from over 40 years in politics. He said he will not seek re-election for a third term as Auckland mayor.
Goff's term as Auckland Mayor comes to a close towards the end of 2022 with local body elections taking place in October.
Speaking to AM, Goff revealed to Ryan Bridge the advice he would give young, long-haired Phil.
"My advice would be - get a haircut," he laughed.
Goff said his mother was always pestering him to cut off his long locks but it wasn't until he went to a conference in Europe he got the chop.
"I came back through Singapore and in those days in Singapore, you couldn't get into the country without a haircut so there in the airport terminal the customs officers [were] cutting my hair," he said.
Years later, Goff had dinner with Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong and told him what a great admirer his mother was of him.
"You succeeded in doing what she tried for seven years and failed."
