Climate activists calling for more inter-regional passenger rail have struck again, bringing traffic on Transmission Gully to a standstill on Wednesday morning.
It's the fifth time the protesters have sat down in front of vehicles on a main road in the last week-and-a-half. The demonstrations have caused disruption to motorists and led some of the activists to be hauled in front of a judge on criminal nuisance charges.
But a spokesperson for the Restore Passenger Rail group says it's for a good cause.
"The Government’s failure to respond to the climate crisis is an act of complete neglect for future generations. Restoring an affordable network of passenger trains in Aotearoa is a basic first step."
The Transport Minister has described their actions as "idiotic, extremely dangerous and totally counterproductive".
He said the Government is "really interested" in the potential for more passenger rail in New Zealand, but "this sort of activity will not build support for it, it'll do exactly the opposite".
