The ACT Party claims the Climate Change Minister is given "the opportunity to interfere in every aspect of a person's life" through Zero Carbon legislation.
ACT climate change spokesperson Simon Court said the Zero Carbon Act won't be supported by his party, despite claims to the contrary by National MP Simon Watts on Newshub Nation last week.
Court said the Zero Carbon Act should be torched, claiming the Emissions Trading Scheme was sufficient enough to meet New Zealand's net-zero 2050 targets.
He said ACT supported the net-zero 2050 target because that's the goal New Zealand's largest trading partners had set.
"Net-zero is an appropriate target given that is what our trading partners have also adopted," Court told Newshub Nation.
"We don't need the Zero Carbon Act, it gives a minister like James Shaw the ability to set targets that are completely unrealistic like cutting New Zealand's carbon emissions in half by 2030. If net zero is an appropriate target for our trading partners, why on earth do we need the Zero Carbon Act and Climate Minister to set a target that is much more radical?"
However, the National Party - ACT's prospective Coalition partner - has poured cold water on repealing the Zero Carbon ACT.
National leader Christopher Luxon said earlier this week his party believed "very strongly in net-zero 2050".
He said while the way National wanted to deliver net zero differed from the current Government, his party was "deeply, deeply committed" to the goal.
