Experts dissect Labour's, other major parties' tax policies

A political expert says it's time for New Zealand to think seriously about whether it's time the country paid more tax to help support institutions like health and education.

On The Hui on Monday, the expert panel of academic Emmy Rakete, Massey University associate Māori dean Professor Matt Roskruge, and broadcaster Māni Dunlop discussed a wide range of topics, including the tax policies of political parties.

Speaking on Labour's decision to drop a wealth tax, Prof Roskruge said there appeared to be a change in the party's approach.

"There seems to be a lot more, especially since Jacinda Ardern, a lot more of a focus on what they're working groups and their focus groups are telling them. There's a lot of PR and spin involved," he said.

"I can only think something came up in there that really spooked them because it was a great platform to go into a third Government on to show that they did something."

Prof Roskruge said New Zealand is likely in a low tax environment and there could be considerations on changing how much tax people pay to help ensure social institutions are "big and healthy".
