National's former Finance Minister Steven Joyce says no matter what New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says ahead of an election "you can't really trust him to come your way".
On Monday, Joyce joined AM ahead of the sale of his new memoir 'Steven Joyce On The Record' where he writes about his time in politics.
Joyce told AM from his experience and dealings with Peters, especially during the 2017 election, "You can't really trust him to come your way no matter what he says ahead of an election".
The former Finance Minister and 'Mr Fixit' of the John Key and Bill English Governments believes Peters has left "himself wriggle room all over the shop" ahead of Election 2023.
"He says that he wouldn't work with Labour but he's just as soon to wake up after the election and say 'Oh I've had a look at these guys and I don't like them, and Labour's changed their leader' or whatever and 'therefore I've got a reason'."
Joyce said during his time at Parliament National ruled Peters out as coalition partner "for good reason" - but said it's not "necessarily" "the right thing to do" for the National Party now.
"I mean that's gotta be their call," he said. "There's arguments both ways from a political perspective."
