Election 2023: Shane Jones not ruling out return of Provincial Growth Fund as NZ First could be back in latest Newshub poll

New Zealand First could be back according to Newshub's latest Reid Research poll and Northland candidate Shane Jones isn't ruling out resurrecting the party's Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) if they find themselves in Government.

With just days to go until advance voting kicks off, Newshub's latest Reid Research poll has revealed the mood amongst voters, and New Zealand First could make a comeback.

Labour dropped 0.3 percent in Newshub's latest poll to 26.5 percent, National dropped too by 1.8 percent to 39.1 percent and the dropping continued, ACT dropped 1.3 percent to 8.8 percent.

The Green Party is climbing though, up 1.9 percent to 14.2 percent, so too is New Zealand First, up 0.6 percent, past the threshold to 5.2 percent.

Northland candidate Jones joined AM on Tuesday after what would be a pleasing poll result, though he's not getting ahead of himself.

"One shouldn't be too premature, but it's reflective of the hard work that the team has put in place, and obviously Winston is packing the town halls throughout New Zealand."

Jones said when the party is out campaigning, he sees Kiwis having a "great interest in New Zealand First coming back to Parliament".

Jones has his eye set on taking the Northland Electorate and told AM he and NZ First are putting "every ounce of effort" into their campaign.

"There's many issues in Northland that we resolved and dealt to during the period of time [we were in Government]. We had the Provincial Growth Fund, well over $650 million was dedicated to deal with the infrastructure deficit," Jones said.

So, if New Zealand First made it back to Parliament, would they want to resurrect the PGF? Jones told AM "there's an ongoing need for regional infrastructure development fund".

"Nothing's static Ryan, and obviously this time round, the money's no longer in such fruitful supply, and it's really important, whoever the government is when the election is over, that a forensic line-by-line analysis takes place before any wild promise are pursued."

When asked if Jones would want to be a Minister, he replied: "Let's just tai ho and all going well we'll be celebrating and enjoying the night of October 14.
