National supporter Mark Richardson has revealed he considered standing for the party after leaving broadcasting.
Newshub national correspondent Amanda Gillies asked Richardson, who used to co-host Three's former morning programme The AM Show with Gillies, whether he would ever stand for National in the Tāmaki electorate - where the pair both live.
However, Richardson ruled out any future bid for the seat: "I had a thought about that and I got sort of close to it."
Gillies and Richardson appeared on AM to dissect the Tāmaki electorate, where AM host Ryan Bridge hosted a debate between candidates Simon O'Connor (National), Brooke van Velden (ACT) and Fesaitu Solomone (Labour) on Wednesday.
Richardson reiterated he wouldn't stand for the seat himself in the future.
"I thought, 'What are my reasons?' And my reasons, I thought, 'No, it's an ego-driven decision' and that's not a great reason to get into politics," he said.
"The other reason? I'd be doing it for a job, that's not the right reason to get into politics - you do it because you want to make a difference."
Richardson, a prominent cricket commentator and former Blackcap, was outspoken about his political views as The AM Show's sports reader.
He stopped news broadcasting this year after the axing of Today FM. He had previously hosted The Block NZ and The Crowd Goes Wild.
After leaving radio, Richardson has taken on a new role in wealth management for investment firm Forsyth Barr, he revealed on Wednesday.
"It's very new, very different but I'm really enjoying it - it's a really good opportunity."
