Watch: The Hui panel dissects Te Tai Tonga debate between Labour's Rino Tirikatene and Te Pāti Māori's Tākuta Ferris

The Hui has hosted its second tautohetohe (debate) of the 2023 election season, this time for the seat of Te Tai Tonga.

Host Julian Wilcox sat down with The Hui panel after the debate to decide who was the winner - Te Pāti Māori's Tākuta Ferris or Labour's Rino Tirikatene.

Political commentator Lara Greaves from Te Herenga Waka/Victoria University said she liked the tone of the debate.

"We can see between Tākuta and Rino that there's kind of agreement around a destination, but [there's] contestation and I think that's just a positive thing for the Māori electorates," Dr Greaves said.

"I love these debates. I look forward to the Māori electorate debates every election."

Meanwhile, Morgan Godfery, senior law lecturer at Te Herenga Waka/Victoria University, said the distance between the pair is small.

"The difference appears to be how far, and how fast," he told The Hui.

"History tells us Māori voters tend to be more incremental than radical. Generally speaking, Māori voters always return a Labour Party incumbent."

So who do they think won?
