In a rare move, National MP Erica Stanford has praised Labour's Ginny Andersen for her work on the miscarriage bereavement leave bill which passed Parliament in 2021.
As election day nears, the two political opponents have revealed what they are most proud of this Parliamentary term.
Appearing on their weekly AM panel slots, Stanford and Andersen were asked for their highs, lows, and buffalos – or most random moments - over the last three years.
Stanford said her high was helping raise awareness for the migrant nurses separated from their children and families at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She said she worked to get the story out there and get Kiwis on board to rally the Government to let them in the country.
"We ended up with a policy change [and] those nurses were reunited with their children and their families – and those were nurses who were looking after our COVID patients in our hospitals," Stanford told AM co-host Laura Tupou.
"I think that is the thing I am most proud of in the last three years."
For Andersen, it was her member's bill that ended up passing legislation to provide bereavement leave for miscarriages.
"I have had a lot of people either write to me or say in person that they had been through a miscarriage and that bill had given them the time to grieve that they really needed, so that was a nice thing," Andersen said.
Stanford agreed, applauding her political opponent for her work.
"That was a great bill and she did an awesome job shepherding it through, so I have to say well done too," Stanford said.
As for one of the most random and surprising events in the past three years, both agreed the return of the NZ First leader would be up there.
"I guess the buffalo has to be Winston Peters coming back," Stanford said.
"Is it a Gruffalo or buffalo?" Andersen added.
