The Labour Party will not stand a candidate in the Port Waikato by-election.
Party President Jill Day said the Port Waikato is a "traditional" National Party electorate that "Labour's never won".
"Our focus is on forming a formidable opposition that holds the incoming Government to account," she said.
"Contesting an unwinnable by-election takes focus and resources away from that role."
The November 25 by-election comes after the death of ACT's candidate in the electorate, Neil Christensen, ahead of the general election.
An ACT Party spokesperson confirmed to Newshub on Friday, it won't be standing a candidate either out of respect for Christensen.
In a statement to Newshub, a National Party spokesperson said the party's only focus is running a "strong campaign" for its candidate Andrew Bayly.
"[And] represent the people of Port Waikato inside the newly-elected National-led Government."
Day acknowledged Labour's Gwendoline Keel who stood for Port Waikato in the general election.
"Gwendoline ran a strong campaign this year in difficult circumstances, and she has a great future in politics ahead of her."
Party nominations for the by-election closed on Friday, a list is expected to be announced this afternoon.
