Budget 2024: Labour's Barbara Edmonds tears up over Government's broken cancer drug promise

Labour's finance spokesperson Barbara Edmonds is upset with the Government's decision not to fund lifesaving cancer treatments in this year's Budget.

Edmonds was 4 years old when her mum died from liver cancer.

"If that was me during an election and a political party told me we can prolong your mother's life, I would be telling all my family and friends to vote for them on that promise," she told AM co-host Lloyd Burr on Friday.

"When it came to yesterday's budget and that was one promise they broke, I would be so incensed and angry because of that."

Finance Minister Nicola Willis revealed her maiden Budget on Thursday, which was missing National's promise to fund 13 new cancer treatments. However, National has not ruled out funding the drugs in future budgets.

Willis claims the Government couldn't spend the $280 million over four years to fund 13 new cancer drugs because of a "funding cliff" which meant they had to fork out $1.77 billion towards Pharmac's budget to keep funding for already funded medicines.

However, Edmonds said the Government made a choice to put $2.9 billion aside for landlords and $14.7 billion aside for tax cuts, and not fund the treatments.

"This is the worst type of promise to break… I'd just be so mad."
