Fast Track Approvals Bill: Political commentator Trish Sherson blasts protest action as 'pejorative' and 'silly'

Right-leaning political commentator Trish Sherson says the call to action against the Fast Track Approvals Bill is "pejorative" and "silly".

The Coalition Government is working to implement the Fast Track Bill but it's faced widespread backlash, resulting in Saturday's protest against the controversial legislation.

"They just want to force through a bunch of projects," Greenpeace Aotearoa executive director Russel Norman told AM on Friday.

"Most New Zealanders do not want development that causes more harm to nature," said Norman, also the former Green Party co-leader.

But Sherson, a former ACT Party staffer, was disappointed about the messages surrounding the protest action.

She said on AM's Friday panel the "headline that's being promoted around tomorrow's protest is pejorative and a bit silly".

"It's not a binary choice between the kind of infrastructure New Zealand desperately needs and looking after the environment."

Sherson said New Zealand was "at a point now where we have to give up the nimbyism - with the right checks and balances in place - and actually get some shit done".

"Go and have a chat to any business today who's trying to transport stuff around New Zealand; talk to them about the additional cost of our terrible roading infrastructure, go and talk to the businesses in Northland who've effectively been closed for months because of the Brynderwyn road."

Sherson also said the bill was an "interim measure".

But former broadcaster Brooke Howard-Smith was critical of the legislation.

"My core concern... this bill feels like it's got some pretty strong loopholes in it," he said, appearing on AM alongside Sherson.

"We need checks and balances, and this simply doesn't have them in place.

"In fact, it's gone out of its way to remove the checks and balances from the system.

"This is a dangerous law that might undermine our political system."
