Migrants shocked after Government brings in immediate visa changes

Migrants were shocked after the Government brought in immediate changes which meant they were no longer eligible to apply for visas for their partners and children to join them in New Zealand.

The Government made changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) last month. It meant people holding an AEWV in roles at Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) levels 4 and 5 without a pathway to residency were no longer able to support work, visitor or student visa applications for their partners and dependent children.

Immigration advisor with HY Immigration & Investment, Howie Yin, told AM there was no consultation before the changes were implemented.

"The policy came out straight away and said effective immediately," he told co-host Melissa Chan-Green.

While Yin agrees that the policy was needed, he said New Zealand has a good international reputation with migrants and should have given a notice period to inform them.

"It's not about the policy itself, it's just the notice periods can be implemented a little bit better, so people are not as shocked."
