Played rugby league as a child, but followed father Andy Farrell - former league international, now Ireland defence coach - into union at Saracens as a teenager.
Farrell debuted for England at second-five against Scotland in 2012 and later that year, he scored 17 points in England's biggest-ever win over the All Blacks. He was nominated for IRB Player of the Year, but lost out to Dan Carter.
He was part of the ill-fated 2015 World Cup campaign, but has excelled under the coaching of Eddie Jones, playing every minute of the successful 2017 Six Nations defence.
Farrell also kicked the decisive penalty in the Lions' second-test triumph in a drawn series against the All Blacks and will captain his country at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
