A horse ambulance has been stolen from the Awapuni Racing Centre causing confusion over why someone would take such a niche vehicle.
A spokesperson for the Racing Centre says the theft is bizarre.
"It is purpose-built to accommodate an injured horse, including a hydraulic system to lower and raise the unit," the spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.
It is hard to imagine why someone would steal this".
The Centre is asking anyone in the lower North Island to keep an eye out for the horse ambulance with the registration 26R38.
As well as being extremely odd, the theft is gutting, as it took a lot of time to raise the money to afford it.
"It's incredibly disappointing after all the hard work and effort to fundraise for the equine ambulance," the spokesperson said.
Anyone who sees the horse ambulance is asked to contact police directly.
A police spokesperson told Newshub they are aware of the theft and are assessing the case.
