Power is out to nearly 100 households in rural central Otago following strong winds on Tuesday.
A helicopter crew has been deployed to help contractors restore the power in remote and snow-affected areas, including the small towns of Millers Flat and Roxburgh - where 85 remain without power.
Power provider Aurora Energy says the Millers Flat hall is open for people to get warm and use facilities.
According to WeatherWatch, temperatures in the area plummeted to 0C overnight and, as of 11am on Wednesday, it was 6C in Roxburgh.
The South Island is being hit by another cold snap, with snow flurries forecast down to 300m in Otago and Southland.
