Tomorrow marks a month since a one-in-100-year flood swept through Whanganui.

Recovery is happening slowly, with some roads still inaccessible and dozens of home still cut off, including Mayor Annette Main's home.

She joined Paul Henry this morning to discuss the dire situation that is still looming over Whanganui.

"There are around 60 to 80 people along the Whanganui River that can't get out of that valley, so they're still having helicopter drops," says Ms Main. "There are several marae up there as well."

She says that "it is going to be a long time 'til the road is fully constructed and it may be up to a year before it's safe for people to travel along it".
