The Flag Consideration Panel has narrowed its 10,000 design submissions to 40 finalist designs.
Of the 40 selected, just one was designed by a woman, while two were designed by groups containing a woman.
Auckland artist Otis Frizzel has two designs on the long-list, and two men each have five flag designs on the list.
Kyle Lockwood's submissions rely heavily on the silver fern and the Southern Cross, while Sven Baker also incorporates Maori imagery.
The Flag Consideration Panel plans to select four by mid-September.
