This week, we celebrated World Meat Free Day but if you missed it, here are some facts to sink your teeth into.
According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, the meat industry generates nearly 20 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions... more than the entire transportation sector.
Up to 19-thousand litres of water goes into producing 1kg of beef.
Back home, Kiwis are among the world's biggest meat-eaters per capita.. each consuming more than 70 kilos of meat a year… that's about 200 grams a day.
And experts believe the world's population will increase to over 9 billion people by 2050 -- that's 30 per cent higher than today.
So how would going meat-free for one day affect the planet we call home?
Massey University Environmental Sociology Lecturer, Dr Corrina Tucker spoke to Duncan Garner.
