Former Kiwis stalwart Benji Marshall has met with Scotland to explore the possibility of playing international rugby league for the country.

Marshall has Scottish ancestry according to Rugby League Week and met with Scotland coach Steve McCormack in June.

Scotland play in the European Cup at the end of the year, a tournament McCormack is trying to entice a number of big players for.

The 30-year-old has played 27 Tests for New Zealand including the Rugby League World Cup win over Australia in 2008.

After long being first-choice at stand-off for the Kiwis, Marshall fell out of favour with coach Stephen Kearney after his short stint with the Blues.

Warriors play maker Shaun Johnson and Manly star Kieran Foran have been the preferred combination and have helped lead the Kiwis to a No.1 world ranking.
