Polish hammer thrower Pawel Fajdek reportedly used a gold medal he won at the Athletic World Championships in China to pay for a taxi.

Fajdek won gold with a winning throw of 80.88 meters and went out to celebrate in Beijing with a few drinks that quickly turned his evening from a dream to nightmare.

Polish journalists covering the event said that the 26-year-old was spotted at a restaurant and "drunk a lot in the celebration party" to toast his success.

Fajdek woke up the next morning in a panicked state when he realised his medal was missing from his hotel room.

Police officers helped Fajdek track down the taxi driver, who told them the hammer thrower had willingly handed his medal over as payment for the ride.

The taxi driver returned the medal, much to Fajdek's relief.
