British racing driver Justin Wilson is in a critical condition following a freak accident in this morning's Indycar race in Pennsylvania.

At first Wilson's crash appeared innocuous but his limp form in the cockpit hinted at something far, far worse.

Then a replay revealed the cause: Sage Karem's three and half kilo nose cone hitting Wilson's head - at the time the Briton was travelling at close to 300 kilometres an hour.

The 37-year-old had been airlifted to hospital by the time his team mate Ryan Hunter won the race.

It was three hours before Indycar officially announced that Wilson had suffered severe head injuries was in a coma and critical condition.

Formula One driver Jules Bianchi suffered fatal head injuries after colliding with a recovery vehicle while Felipe Massa's skull was fractured after another car's spring hit his helmet.
