Despite a failed crack at rugby union last year, Benji Marshall could switch codes a second time if he doesn't get a new deal from the St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Dragons are reportedly cool on offering their star playmaker an extension to his current contract which finishes in 2016, while Marshall isn't eyeing retirement until at least 2018.

That leaves the door open for a move to Super League in the United Kingdom or a move to union in Japan, according to Marshall's agent Martin Tauber.

"We've talked about another two years after 2016," Tauber told foxsports.com.au.

"He might change his mind and want to do one year or go to England or Japan.

"In fairness we'd certainly go to the Dragons first and give them the opportunity to take him on if they wished.

"We'll consider all of those opportunities during that time frame."

Marshall returned to the NRL last year after a failed Super Rugby stint with the Blues in which he played only seven games.

The former Tiger had a vintage season this year, coming third in Dally M voting and when asked if he wanted to finish his career with the Dragons, answered: "Definitely".

"I'll sit down with [coach] Mary [McGregor] and see where they want to go.

"If it's with the Dragons, it will be; if not, somewhere else."
