All Black Dan Carter leaves for France on Thursday to take up a three-year contract with a French side.

He was launching his new book today, but he's been thinking about the people of Paris.

There was standing room only outside Paper Plus Barrington as he began his third book signing of the day.

"It's been a pretty full-on day but I guess it's better than no one turning up at all. It feels pretty good that so many people have come out," says Carter.

The famous first-five was busy promoting his book, My Story, before leaving for Paris on Thursday to take up a three-year contract with Racing Metro.

He says it's hard not to think about the events in the city over the past 33 hours.

"It's hard not to avoid it, but I haven't really thought too much about it apart from the fact our thoughts go out to all the people living in Paris. It's such a tragic moment."

Carter says he has a lot of close friends already living in Paris, and they're all safe.

Meanwhile eager fans were keen to get one last signature and photo from Carter before he departs for France.

The book only went on sale on Friday, and already it looks set to give Richie McCaw's record-setting book, The Open Side, a good run for its money.
