World No.1 tennis star Serena Williams has been spotted catching a taxi to the finish line of her own charity run.

Witnesses saw Williams hail a cab just two kilometres into the five-kilometre race as she sped to the finish line.

The star hosted the Miami event which 3000 keen runners took part in to raise money for her Serena Williams fund, which "helps individuals and communities affected by senseless violence, and promoting equal access to education."

"I didn't run the whole way this year, but next year I will," Williams said in a video posted to her Facebook page.

It is not yet known why Williams hailed the cab and skipped three kilometres of the race, but it's thought previous injuries are to blame.

The 34-year-old announced in October she was taking the rest of the year off to recover from a series of knocks.
